Summer Field Research Program Announced
Applications are now open for our annual Summer Field Research Program, which will focus on glacial monitoring in the Tian Shan mountains. This intensive six-week program provides undergraduate and graduate students with hands-on experience in field research methods, data collection, and analysis in one of Central Asia's most important mountain ecosystems.
The program will run from July 1 to August 15, 2025, and will include:
- Two weeks of preparatory coursework on campus, covering glaciology, field methods, and safety protocols
- Three weeks of field research at multiple sites in the Tian Shan mountains
- One week of data analysis and presentation preparation
Participants will work alongside faculty researchers and international collaborators to collect data on glacial retreat, meltwater dynamics, and associated ecological changes. The research will contribute to ongoing monitoring efforts and climate change impact assessments in the region.
"This program offers a unique opportunity for students to gain practical research experience in a spectacular and scientifically significant environment," said Dr. Elena Kim, Program Director. "Participants will develop valuable skills in field research, data analysis, and teamwork while contributing to important scientific knowledge about our changing mountain environments."
The program is open to students from all universities, with priority given to those studying geography, environmental science, earth science, or related fields. A total of 20 positions are available, and successful applicants will receive a stipend to cover program expenses.
Application requirements include:
- Completed application form
- Academic transcript
- Letter of motivation
- One academic reference
The application deadline is April 30, 2025. For more information and to apply, please visit the Summer Field Research Program page on our website or contact the program coordinator at fieldresearch@yyh.edu.kg.
